Baby Story Time

What Baby Story Time is All About

We did lots and lots of rain rhymes today, because it's absolutely pouring. To the point I was surprised that anyone came!

Welcome Song:

Where is baby? Where is baby?
There (s)he is! There (s)he is!
I’m so glad to see you, I’m so glad to see you
Peek-a-boo! Peek-a-boo!

Go around the room singing to each child, substituting the child’s name for “baby”

Mother Goose Rhymes:

Doctor Foster
Went to Gloucester
In a shower of rain.
He stepped in a puddle
Right up to his middle
And never went there again!

It’s raining it’s pouring,
The old man is snoring.
He bumped his head and he went to bed
And he couldn’t get up in the morning.

Rain rain go away,
Come again another day
Little baby wants to play
Rain Rain go away

Go around the room singing to each child, substituting the child’s name for “baby”

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Up came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider walked up the spout again

Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold
Pease porridge in the pot, 9 days old
Some like it hot, some like it cold
Some like it in the pot, 9 days old

Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down
Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)

Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck two, the mouse said “woo”
Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)

Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck three, the mouse said “wee”
Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)

Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck four, the mouse said “no more”
Hickory dickory dock (tick tock, tick tock)

Book:

Ten in the Bed by Jane Cabrera

Bright, bold, colorful illustrations offer a fun take on the traditional song. I love the way the bed turns into something else on every page as the animals imagine different settings and the poor little mousie who just wants to sleep. WARNING: The picture book version contains a few pages that ARE NOT in the board book version, so if you're using both versions, be prepared! (I, uh, might have learned that one the hard way this morning.)

Bounces and Action Rhymes:

The Grand Old Duke of York, he had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down
And when they were only halfway up
They were neither up nor down!

Stand up or lift baby (or just baby’s arms) up and down according to the rhyme

Arms up, arms down, arms up
And wave them all around

Then tickle tickle wiggle giggle
Everybody knows
That’s how baby’s hokey pokey goes

Legs up, legs down, legs up
And kick them all around

Then tickle tickle wiggle giggle
Everybody knows
That’s how baby’s hokey pokey goes!

This is the way the ladies ride:
Walk walk walk
This is the way the gentlemen ride:
Trot trot trot
This is the way the children ride:
BOOM BOOM BOOM

Bounce the baby on your knee or foot. When the ladies ride, bounce very softly, for the gentlemen, bounce a little more, and then bounce very vigorously when the children ride!

Song:

Shake My Sillies Out by Raffi.

We all have maracas to shake as we sing along!

Book:

Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming

I love any book that involves making tons of animal sounds. This is also a fun one as the kids can try to find the goose on every page. But really, ANIMAL SOUNDS.

Closing:

Patty cake, patty cake
Baker’s man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can!
Roll it, and pat it
And mark it with a B
And throw it in the oven for baby and me!

Clap baby’s hands for the first three lines. When rolling the cake, roll your hands, and then pat your knees when patting the cake. Draw a B on baby’s hand when marking the cake and mime throwing it in the oven at the end.

(to the tune of Shortnin’ Bread)

Every little cell in my body is happy
Every little cell in my body is well
Every little cell in my body is happy
Every little cell in my body is well
I’m so glad every little cell
In my body is happy and well
I’m so glad every little cell
In my body is happy and well
Every little cell in my body is happy
Every little cell in my body is well
